I think a pledge is a promise
I have since heard however that a pledge can be a donation or rather an offer of continuing financial support for a person or organization . Either way there are still several ideas and feeling around the very word "Pledge",some thinking that it is said in a futuristic sense rather than in the present? I'd be interested to know what you think.

I view a pledge as a promise too - it can be a promise of a single action or donation or gift, or an ongoing promise of change, or actions, but it's a promise.
1. a solemn promise or agreement to do or refrain from doing something: a pledge of aid; a pledge not to wage war.
From Dictionary.com. They further define it as a binding promise, a more formal and public thing than a simple promise. It's somehow deeper, more than a promise.
Am I making any sense?

Either/ or and maybe both together.
Making any pledge is a way of committing oneself to following through with it especailly as it is a promise. If it is a donation then that I would see as a token of support which in it's own way expresses the unity of similar thinking and a sincere well wish for the cause or whatever. Does that make sense?
