Karen Maskall's Blog (58)

Why reply in writing when you can send a video?

Just the other day on Ecademy I received an email from one of the members prompting me to check out a blog post that he had made about the debate surrounding the UK Post Office and the pending stikes. Whilst I was browsing some of the responses I came across one reply by Stewart Graham, that was posted as a video. Well I had never really thought about this possibility before but I was absolutely intrigued. Not just by his blog response but how useful the video was with respects to promoting him… Continue

How TV programs blur out THE REALITY!

For this post I'm just going to focus on one of my favorite TV programs. The program is called "Selling Houses" and the presenter who is an estate agent shows us how, be spending a very limited budget,we can transform a house and get it ready for a really fast sale! Love it.. I love to see those instant transformations. I have been watching programs like these for months. My brain concentrates on the beautiful and easy transformations. My brain starts to think of ways I can transform my own home.… Continue

5 Social Networking Mistakes to Avoid

When it comes to social networking nothing is written in stone so you need to use your common sense. Below I have outlined some of the more common faux-pas of Social Networking. Stick to the Netiquette and avoid the following and you won’t go far wrong. * Shoving your business down other people’s throats is utterly tasteless and frankly - spammy. There is only one place for Spam and it is in a fritter (and even those have gone out of fashion). If you were invited to a dinner party, would… Continue

The problem with non-followers back on Twitter

I've finally come to the conclusion that it really is necessary to unfollow anyone on twitter who does not follow you back. Twitter has some sort of ratio of followers to those you are following. And if you are following too many and do not have enough following you back, there comes a time when you cannot follow any more people. And in turn that may mean that your genuine followers will have to unfollow YOU because their ratio is being affected too. Oh it's all very silly of twit… Continue

Sharing the joys of your hand made craft skills

One of the great things about being "Crafty" ...able to make things of quality, something to be treasured and valued..is being able to share those skills with others. Can you imagine sharing your skills and expertise and enthusiasm with small groups of children in an after school club? What about helping retired or less abled persons develop their talents...treasure the moments when a grandma gives hand made birthday presents to her grandchildren or finds a new lease of life with a great new hob… Continue

Once again saddened by mindless destruction

I have just been down to the River Dee here in Chester for my usual daily walk with my dogs, and I am absolutely saddened by this mindless destruction of natural habitat that councils and authorities (in this case I'm told it is the Rivers Authority) who decide its in the best interest not only to keep the public path neatly mowed but the whole of the embankment 30 metre wide. Only 3 days ago I was admiring the delicate wildflowers and enjoying watching the butterflies and other insects sharing… Continue

Save Bats From White-nose Syndrome and Extinction

Bats are dying by the hundreds of thousands across eastern North America, and the disease that’s killing them -- white-nose syndrome -- shows no sign of slowing down. It’s likely that this fatal, fast-spreading sickness will soon be killing bats in the Midwest and the South, home to some of the most significant bat hibernation sites in the world. Left unchecked, white-nose syndrome could spread even further to populations in the western United States and to bats in other countries. Despite the… Continue

Going Veggy 3 days per week

I finally made the decision to at least attempt at going vegetarian without upsetting the family who really do love thier meat. Last night we had cauliflower and spinach bake (the spinach was left over form the salad made at the weekend)served with mushrooms and garlic bread. It was so simple to do with a lovely cheese sauce made from milk/the cauli water a little cornflower thickening and some really nice Double Gloucester cheese. A couple of organic tomatoes off the vine topped it all. I thi… Continue

Albatross: the end of the line

Every year, 100,000 albatrosses are killed needlessly by drowning on the end of fishing hooks. 19 of the 22 species of albatross in the world are threatened with extinction, largely because of longline fishing. If you can help us act now, the Save the Albatross campaign can help stop these magnificent birds from becoming extinct. Your money can fund the Albatross Task Force teams and their urgent work to train fishermen to keep seabirds off the hook. We need your help. To find out more, visit:… Continue

Do all the good you can, By all the means you can, In all the ways you can, In all the places you can, At all the times you can, To all the people you can, As long as ever you can. -- John Wesley, "Letters of John Wesley"

Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centres of energy and daring, those ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance. -- Robert F. Kennedy
